Is the Slaughthouse in your horse’s future or what are your options? Why would you make that choice?

Posted by on April 22, 2012

I posted this on a linked in Equus discussion about the slaughterhouse issue.

I felt it should also be read by my readers. Hope you send me your suggestions to get this info published for people to know about.:

I don’t propose to make anyone pay for a fund for their horses, just suggest it for a good “business” practice if you actually need a reason to justify a bank account for each horse for the purpose of the end of life of your horse, so you have enough money 2-20 years from now to humanely deal with your horse, rather than send it to a slaughterhouse.
Some people are good at managing money, others not or are just not so lucky in life to have any or enough money to survive.

There is no way to save the whole world, just what little pieces of it that we can as we travel through life. I was sitting in church this morning, praying that I come up with good answers for this group. I remembered an old saying, ” you can eat an elephant one bite at a time…” (perhaps not the best wording for this group today, but…)

If someone could explain statistics of the origin of these 100,000 horses that go to slaughter each year. Maybe we could start subgroups to work on each problem.

How many are from race tracks, breeders, family pets, rescues, BLM pens, ranchers, lost and found, abused hoarders, or otherwise?

Which state are they from — percentages and reasons why?

What are each state’s laws on abuse, slaughterhouse, burial of horses on your property.

What funds are available for people who need help in each state.

Is there or should we start a directory of what organizations, veterinarians, etc, and contact names to call for help people with end of life of horses.

Do we have a good grant writer in the group to submit a proposal to the Pepsi Challenge website for good idea grants and funding.

I will put all this info on my website and links and referrals if I had it. We could all do that.

We need a list of major reasons why a horse is put done, set free, abandoned, unwanted.
Why they were sent to a slaughterhouse? profit, last resort, economy, ignorance
What age, health, breed, sex, etc.

If there was full disclosure, maybe there would be better answers for our group and the rest of the country.

My best suggestion is education of school children to adults on all aspects of this issue.
It has been going on for decades and will continue as long as there is money to be made, ignorance of what options and reasons of each option and apathy or political confusion in government.

This does not have to be addressed as “if it started now, it will take 7 years to correct” philosophy. Or this one or that one is to blame.
Most people with horses, want to be around horses and don’t plan on hurting them on purpose.

I am not a religious zealot and I don’t even read the Bible, but since it is Sunday, I will share this info from one of my readers last week:
Bible animals are precious to God and in the words of Psalm 148: 5-10 we see just how special animals are to our Father. “Let them praise the name of the LORD! For He commanded and they were created. And He established them forever and ever; He gave a decree, and it shall not pass away. Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling His word! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Beast and livestock, creeping things and flying birds. The LORD loves all that He has created. If we love God we do compassion and justice for all creation.

The Bible infers: food animals are only to be those with cleft feet …
horses don’t have cleft feet so are taboo to eat by Christians.

You can make your own choices in life.
My choice is against the slaughterhouse.
I wouldn’t even let my cat go be butchered if I were starving and the last person on earth.

I hope someday the next generation of today’s children will continue this fight, for as long as there are wild horses, and horse industries in the US, and profits to be made, there will always be an evil motive to raise its ugly head again and start up all over. It is a fight that will need lots of education in schools, at pony clubs, at political conventions, and friends and family dinner tables and internet discussion groups like this.

Have a nice Sunday afternoon everybody.
I wrote a book trying to address lots of these issues.
My blog tries to covers many sides and hope that
eventually the horse will be helped.

They have been serving mankind since the beginning of civilization. I believe they have a right to humane care and responsible stewardship. They need watchdogs and lobbying in government to protect them.

Best wishes to all of you for trying to do the right thing.

I will be a voice to help them for the rest of my life.
