RENO, (Horseback) – As of Midnight last night the fire still burned near the BLM Palomino Valley Center wild horse and burro holding facility in Sparks, Nevada.
The majority of the fire was being fought from the air due to the terrain and that effort ceased after dark to resume at first light. Fire crews on the ground were witnessed quickly responding to any flare up.
At this time there are no plans to evacuate horses from the facility but the Sheriff’s Department told Horseback that the fire crews and BLM personnel were remaining onsite to facilitate evacuation if that became necessary.
Currently the facility holds the horses taken from the recent controversial Jackson Mountain Roundup that gained a Temporary Restraining Order restricting removal operations to an area documented to be suffering drought conditions. The Order held BLM to their own protocols prohibiting helicopter roundups during foaling season in all but emergent situations. According to BLM foaling season ends on July 1 and the roundup had just resumed.
When asked if the facility would continue receiving horses from the range as the fire was still burning there was no knowledge at the Sheriff’s level. An inquiry has been sent to BLM.
