The Trail  ~

From Somewhere to Nowhere & Back

Thru The Eyes Of The Horse

Toyahvale, Texas ~ The Somewhere

Documented history states the Spanish explorer Antonio de Espejo camped at what is now known as Toyahvale, Texas beside the San Solomon Springs 429 years ago (August, 1582) with his expedition party of Indians, 114 horses and pack burros. In December, 1683 Juan Dominguez de Mendoza led a detachment of soldiers east from El Paso down the Rio Grande then to Toyahvale from Presidio.

During the 1930’s and early 40’s the 1st Calvary held war maneuvers in Toyahvale with over 3,000 horses ~

The Toyahvale Post Office was a major stage stop along the Pecos Trail.  Horses were the source of transportation for the mail carriers ~

“The Trail” from Toyahvale to Presidio has been traveled for hundreds of years. The horse, burro’s and mules were how it was done. The equine were respected and revered.  They had honor!  Today, horses that were once respected and honored for centuries are being carried along this very same trail to their death.   They travel thru Toyahvale to Presidio where they are held in export pens until crossing into Mexico to slaughter.

Today The Trail  is a Trail Of Tears ~

What began as a helpless feeling of dread when faced with the realities of the slaughtering of our horses and burros has grown into the beginnings of what will be the change.  Here is my story of how living on this trail inspired the Thundering Hooves ~ A Native Peoples Event!
