Horsemeat Scandal Continues to Spread Across Europe and Potentially Worldwide

horse-meat11nw1[1]Since horsemeat has been found in beef burgers and lasagna in the UK, the horsemeat scandal across Europe continues to grow, with news coverage across the world, including Canada’s Globe & Mail.  Legal action is expected across Europe, as the UK’s Environment Secretary says contamination is a ”straight case of fraud“.  In this Guardian.co.uk report, Environment Secretary Owen Paterson confirmed that the government was open to bringing in the Serious and Organised Crime Agency if, as seems evident, the fraud is on an international scale. He said the Metropolitan police had been asked to investigate the scandal and that the force was liaising with counterparts in other countries. Paterson suggested the scandal was potentially a “worldwide” issue.
“I’m concerned that this is an international criminal conspiracy here and we’ve really got to get to the bottom of it,” he said.
In this The Independent report, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. are mentioned, “In 2011, 1.8 million tons of horsemeat was imported to France from Canada, with another 1.2 million tons coming from Mexico. The source of most of this is the US.  France also slaughters 16,970 of its own horses, but the public health concern centres on meat originating not only from eastern and central Europe, but from the US.”
Phenylbutazone contamination is also addressed in these reports, and consumers are being asked to return products that may contain horsemeat.
