Dear Denise,

Thank you for contacting my office about the prevention of horse slaughter.  I appreciate hearing from you about this issue.

As you may know, since 2006 annual legislation pertaining to federal spending has prohibited federal funding of horse slaughter inspections, effectively prohibiting the slaughter of horses in the United States.  I have voted to continue this ban for the upcoming year and have signed letters in support of funding to adequately enforce key animal protection laws including the Horse Protection Act.

However, since the remaining horse slaughter facilities in the United States were closed, over 100,000 horses have been sent from our country to Mexico and Canada for slaughter each year.  I have cosponsored the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, which would permanently ban the slaughter of horses in the United States and prohibit the transportation of these animals to other countries in order for them to be slaughtered for human consumption.  Please be assured that I will continue to work to prevent cruelty and protect animal rights.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with me.  Please do not hesitate to contact my office with any future concerns.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Shaheen
United States Senator
Senator Shaheen <senator@shaheen.senate.gov>
